Word Bomb is a game where a bomb shows a short group of letters and you type a real word that contains them before the fuse runs out. The most common fragments are ES, IN, ER, TI and TE, and each appears inside more than 19,000 words in the dictionary Word Bomb on Drawblins uses, so speed matters more than vocabulary.
Word Bomb is a common name for this style of game, and versions exist on several sites and platforms. This guide is based on Word Bomb on Drawblins, where the numbers below come from the game's own dictionary: the public-domain ENABLE word list of about 172,000 words plus a short supplement of modern words. Counts are for words of three or more letters and are rounded where noted.
How Word Bomb works
- The bomb shows a fragment. It is two or three letters, such as ING or TR.
- You type a word that contains it. The letters can be anywhere in the word, at the start, the middle or the end.
- A valid word passes the bomb on. The next player gets a new fragment.
- If the fuse runs out, you lose a life. Everyone starts with two lives, and the last player standing wins.
- No repeats. A word cannot be used twice in the same round.
- The fuse shortens. It starts at 10 seconds and loses 0.4 seconds every four turns, down to a minimum of 5.5 seconds.
- Up to 16 players take turns while everyone else in the room watches, and bots fill empty seats, so you can play with two people or by yourself against bots.

Because ES, ER, IN and ED are endings as well as middles, plurals, comparatives, "-ing" forms and past tenses all work. When you see one, reach for a word you can type without thinking.
How the game picks fragments
Fragments are not hand-picked. At startup, the game counts every two- and three-letter run of letters across the whole dictionary and keeps only the ones that sit inside plenty of words, so a bomb can always be defused. Easy fragments come first and harder ones appear as the game goes on:
- Easy: two-letter fragments found in at least 2,500 words, and three-letter fragments found in at least 700.
- Medium: two-letter fragments found in 900 to 2,499 words, and three-letter fragments found in 300 to 699.
- Hard: three-letter fragments found in 120 to 299 words.
Hard fragments and words that fit
Late in a round you will meet rarer fragments, each hiding in roughly 120 to 125 words. These are a sample.
| Fragment | Words containing it | Example words |
|---|---|---|
| OPY | 120 | copy, mopy, dopy |
| YPT | 120 | crypt, crypto, crypts |
| DEE | 121 | deed, deep, deer |
| GIB | 121 | gibe, gibes, gibbon |
| WEI | 121 | weigh, weird, weir |
| COW | 122 | cowl, scowl, coward |
| LAW | 122 | lawn, flaw, lawyer |
| PIP | 122 | pipe, pipit, pipette |
| BAB | 122 | baby, babble, babe |
| RHO | 122 | rhombus, rhodium, rhomb |
Tips for staying alive
- Type, do not think. The first word that fits is the right word. Longer words are not worth more.
- Use endings. Add S, ED or ING to a short word you already know, and the fragment often comes with it.
- Keep a small word bank per fragment. Two or three words you can type instantly beat a clever long word you have to spell.
- Watch the used words. Common words go early in a round. Keep a less obvious one in reserve.
- Do not panic on three letters. A three-letter bomb narrows the options, but the game only uses fragments that sit inside plenty of words.
